Elyse, Founder of Flykick

 

Hi Elyse! We love Flykick and how you’ve made kickboxing fun and accessible to all! Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you started Flykick?

Hi Alexa, I am thrilled to hear that you and the team love FLYKICK. It really means a lot to us and is something we never get tired of hearing. Our main goal is to provide you with the best experience possible so when we hear feedback like this, we know we are doing our job right.

FLYKICK’s origin comes from the amazing Charlie Kemper, our CEO. When Charlie moved to London from NYC he sought out somewhere to continue his favourite workout, group-exercise kickboxing, but he discovered there was nothing like it here. This is when he realised an opportunity to create something completely new to London, a kickboxing group fitness class for everyone. Charlie was connected to Ben Leonard Kane, COO and Head of Concept, through a mutual friend and together they began dreaming up their ideal concept. Ben left the corporate world to bring the first F45 franchise to London over from Australia.  Having that boutique experience, along with a great knowledge of fitness and boxing, contributed greatly to the early stages of developing FLYKICK.

I came on board two years ago to round out the trinity of Co-Founders. My experience comes from seven years of working in luxury fitness, beginning my career with Canada’s leading athletic wear brand called Lululemon Athletica. I was part of the team who opened the first European store here in London – Lululemon developed my ability to deliver a supreme memorable and authentic guest experience. After a few years managing boutique fitness studios in London, such as Psycle – London’s leading spin studio, I had a large “tool box” of knowledge ready to pursue a concept which I personally felt passionate about. I was introduced to Ben through a mutual friend; we grabbed a cup of coffee in Shoreditch and discussed our shared passion for boxing and fitness boutiques, and I made the decision to join FLYKICK. Ben, someone who doesn’t take no for an answer, made sure I was part of the team, something I will always be grateful for!

The rest is history really. The three of us, along with an outstanding team of committed, passionate team created FLYKICK.

 

What’s been the highlight of the Flykick journey so far?

A huge highlight was opening the doors and actually seeing people come in, take class, and enjoy the experience. I would also include working with such an amazing team; I learn and grow every day, seeing incredible, smart, savvy people believe in FLYKICK and give it their all really inspires me to work harder than ever before.

 

There must be a temptation to do a Flykick class every day! What does your fitness routine look like?

I would ideally take a class everyday if I could, however FLYKICK is like my baby, and it requires lots of love, energy and attention. That being said I am sure motherhood is much harder, but this is the closest I have gotten so far, haha!  I happily put everything into it, which sometimes scrambles my fitness routine. Typically I train 3-4 times per week, but if I could I would do FLYKICK 7 days a week. The effect this class has on my body is astonishing, and the mental release just helps me be more resilient to stress.

 

You’re a very busy person, how do you create balance in your life?

Balance is definitely tricky with a start-up, but I am really lucky to have a great support team around me. My team and husband inspire and keep me accountable to train, practice self-care, and to rest. Some weeks are manic, but then you make a concerted effort to create space in the following weeks… it’s all about not being too hard on yourself.

 

Do you have any health rituals

Each morning I have a turmeric elixir, and a health bowl. I try and reduce my consumption of meat throughout the week. I also enjoy inspirational podcasts which I listen to on my daily commute – a form of meditation.

My Turmeric elixir: turmeric, lemon, chili powder, cinnamon, honey, and apple cider vinegar.  My health bowl: Vega protein powder, almonds, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, blueberries, spirulina, maca, chia seeds and goji berries. This helps fuel my mornings and prepare my body well for a day full of creativity and activity.

 

And finally, can you tell us any of your exciting plans for the coming year?

FLYKICK is on to big things! We have had incredible feedback from our community that there is just nothing like us in London. We have been told that we are the friendliest, most welcoming studio in London, which says a lot knowing how scary it can be coming to a new studio or trying a new style of training. That paired with our unique concept tells us we are on to something here, and can’t wait to see it grow and grow.
